Research Progress
When I joined PhD, I thought I will do something original. Unable to do that, I started making an attempt to modify or improve something that has already been done. After some time, I downgraded to trying to reproduce the reported results. Finally, unable to do that also, for the last 2 days, I have been sending emails to the authors of papers asking them how they got their results. I wonder what the next phase is

Hi, I know this is a really funny post, but my question is seriously genuine... How do I get to work as a research assitant for one you scientists ?? Thanks..
I am a BC in EC and I have 8 years of work experience in software industry. I have more questions though... 1>Can I assist a Phd with no relevant work experience. 2>Is there a time when most researches start( like say an academic year beginning) and time for most adverts for research assitant or do i keep looking all through the year , in case they keep coming all the time. 3>Do scientist/researcher look for work experience or just degree. 4> Is there a set way of hiring a research assitant or is it left solely to the whim of the researcher
1>Can I assist a Phd with no relevant work experience. Yes, you can. However, instead of assisting a researcher, why don't you join for a research programme itself if you are interested in this area? 2>Is there a time when most researches start( like say an academic year beginning) and time for most adverts for research assitant or do i keep looking all through the year , in case they keep coming all the time. Depends on the professor. Some of them do update their websites whenever they have a requirement. Keep checking or you can email the prof directly and express your interest in joining them. 3>Do scientist/researcher look for work experience or just degree. I would say, both matter 4> Is there a set way of hiring a research assitant or is it left solely to the whim of the researcher The decision ultimately rests with the professor or the prinicipal investigator of the project.
Do feel free to contact me in case you have any other queries
Thanks a ton for your patient reply. Really appreciate it.
Regarding your suggestion to research , I hold a Bachelors, so getting a Masters degree and then applying for research is too long a process for me to venture at this point of my life. I would rather get a taste of how things go before deciding on doing something on my own. One last question, hopefully, unless , your answer brings in some more :) I have no contacts in IISc nor do I know any professors there not even names. So whats the best place to look for, if any ?
Update : I found this http://www.cedt.iisc.ernet.in If no link to professor's website, then I assume, there are none or do you have any insider information of the professor's websites ?
You can look up the websites of the profs and see if they have their email ids put up there. In addition to CEDT you can check out ECE, EE and CSA. Most of them will have it. You can write directly to them and enquire. Some of them will reply. Regarding CEDT, I am not aware of any other professors websites other than those listed on the website. Their email ids and broad areas of interest are mentioned right? You can write to them and see if they respond. Best wishes!
1. I prefer analog watches over digital watches. This is because even after the battery is dead, the analog watch shows the correct time twice a day.
2. I have an obsession for spotlessly clean, transparent glass surfaces, mirrors and lenses.
3. I can write with both my hands (not at the same time).
4. Chemistry and chess are two things that are very close to my heart. I am unable to decide whether the fact that they both start with “che” is mere coincidence or numerology at work.
5. I love the smell of camphor, medicines and petrol.
6. I firmly believe that if you consider the fact that I comb my hair only once a day, my hairstyle is not so bad.
7. I believe in Murphy’s laws and the existence of aliens. However, I do not believe in ghosts. I sincerely wish that Santa Claus exists.
8. As you must have guessed by now, I have been to a psychiatrist. In fact, I was so good that the psychiatrist came to visit me.
9. On an average, I speak the truth nine out of ten times.
10. Whenever in doubt, I state Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle.

I would say, both matter
